Positive Breathing: A Natural Antidepressant

One of the very few things we can control in this world is our breath, and it is a very powerful tool. My teacher Dharma Mittra showed me many breathing exercises that helped me tackle anxiety, depression, allergies, and more…naturally.

I find one of the most powerful breathing techniques to be Positive Breathing.
This breathing technique increases positive feelings, improves digestion and generates heat.

Here’s how to do it:

Step 1: Remember to only breathe through the right nostril.

Step 2: Using the right hand, fold the index and middle fingers (2 fingers closest to the thumb), keeping the thumb, ring finger and pinky finger extended.

Step 3: Close the left nostril with your ring finger.

Step 4: Inhale through the right nostril for a count of 8.

Step 5: Hold the breath for a count of 6 (blocking the right nostril with your thumb).

Step 6: Exhale through the right nostril for a count of 8.

Step 7: Repeat for a minimum of 2 minutes, max of 20.

For beginners, you can start with shorter counts of 4-3-4.
*Be sure to only breathe through the right nostril.

Please note: Do not include the breath retention if you have any heart problems, high blood pressure or asthma. Then, only practice inhalation and exhalation.

Namaste,
Brenda
