Most New Year’s resolutions are not going to make you happy. They are a byproduct of your unhappiness. They are like band aids on a wound that is deeper than your skin.
According to the Journal of Clinical Psychology, these are some of your top resolutions for 2013.
- Lose Weight
- Save Money
- Get Organized
- Quit Smoking
- Fall in Love
When you are unhappy, lonely or overworked, you tend to eat more, spend more, busy yourself and take on unhealthy habits.
You can’t fix a totaled car by adding a new coat of paint to it so why would you try that same tactic on yourself.
Instead of doing the same old resolution declaration and then quitting it after a week, try something new. Start a daily yoga, breathing and or meditation practice at home or in a group setting. Use this time to quiet your mind and afterwards ask yourself what it is that will make you happy. Maybe all you need is that quiet time to appreciate everything that you already have (i.e. your health, your job, your family, etc.) Maybe this quiet time will uncover a dream or hobby you’d like to spend time on that will make you happier.
And guess what? When you are happier, you will lose weight, spend less, be more organized, lose the bad habits and possibly meet someone happy like you.
Namaste and Happy New Year!
